FORT SILL, Okla.-- Retirees from six states attended the 32nd Annual Retiree Appreciation Days at Fort Sill Sept. 16 through Saturday.
"Everything is amazing this year. There are a lot more booths in the hospital than there were last year. I was in there for four hours and just finished doing everything I want to do," said Abby Dronet, an Army retiree who has attended the open house for four years.
Flu shot, health screening
After stopping by each vendor to get information on their services, Dronet got a flu shot and health screening before being ushered to Building 4700 for a new ID card.
Many people opted to tour Fort Sill and the Wichita Mountains on Friday. The monthly retirement ceremony drew in a larger crowd than usual. The day finished with a banquet at the Patriot Club.
Lawrence Singer received recognition for driving the farthest to attend the event.
Illinois retiree
"I drove here from Springfield, Illinois," said Singer. "It was a 13-hour trip but well worth it. Everything was wonderful. I did the tour, went to the cookout and had a great time. I've been coming back for years and don't plan on missing one. The open house was phenomenal. Everyone did an excellent job."
Emma and Vernon Hein made a five-hour trek from Talihina, Okla.
"We come almost every year, except we missed it last year," said Vernon. "We are retired military and were stationed here."
The Heins come each year not only to take care of their personal business and medical issues but also to see friends who still live in the area. They said this year's event was especially nice.
"The buffalo cookout was our favorite part," said Emma, though she added the music was a bit too loud.
With very few complaints and fun had by most, organizers said the event was a success.
