SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Thirty members of the Installation Management Community have been selected as mentees in the IM Headquarters Centralized Mentoring Program.

"We applaud the selectees - and the senior leaders who have volunteered and been matched as mentors," said Daniel Smartt, the program's manager.

As part of a challenging year-long commitment, Smartt explained that participants will meet regularly, focusing on skill sets, career goals and Individual Development Plans. "They will explore areas for professional growth," he said, "and expand their networks of leaders in the Army Installation Management Community."

Overall, HCMP identifies dynamic employees in the GS 11-13 equivalent range, matching each person with a mentor recognized as an outstanding leader, typically at the GS 14-15 level.

The program supports Army IM in numerous ways, including:

*Developing skilled, committed and forward-thinking employees for higher levels of responsibility;

*Recognizing and encouraging career planning within the IM Community;

*Building the core of a work culture characterized by mentoring at all levels, with each mentee in turn being equipped to serve others as a mentor.

And, just as importantly, Smartt noted that HCMP provides a mechanism for "re-investing its leaders' legacy of knowledge and wisdom." Meaning: mentees will serve the IM community by tapping that legacy and preparing to pass it on to those they may mentor in the future.

Additionally, a new development for HCMP in 2011 aims at producing a concrete, tangible benefit to the entire IM community. The 30 mentor/mentee partnerships will be divided into six working groups, each given a project based on one of the six lines of effort in the Installation Management Campaign Plan. Throughout a six-month period, each group will collaborate to produce a strategic briefing for IM leadership.

Accordingly, Debra Zedalis (Installation Management Command senior Mentoring Sponsor and director of IMCOM-Pacific) and G1 Talent Management Division recognize that HCMP's success "depends on the important contribution of the supervisors and commanders of the mentor and mentee participants," said Smartt. "Although participants make every effort to keep program activities from disrupting their regular jobs, there will be times during the year when their chains of command make adjustments so that they can fully participate. For this very real contribution, the IM community owes the participants' supervisors sincere appreciation."
