Members of The New York Military Youth Cadets recently received a whirlwind tour of the Nation's Capital hosted by Joint Force Headquarters - National Capital Region and The U.S. Army Military District of Washington (JFHQ-NCR/MDW). The 12th Aviation Battalion took the lead in coordinating the trip.

Cadets stayed on the Display Ship Barry at the Washington Navy Yard. During their visit they toured the Pentagon, U.S. Capital; Marine Corps Museum at Quantico; Davison Army Airfield and 911th Engineer "Trec Facility" at Ft.Belvoir, laid a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery and did a service project at the 3rd U.S. Army Infantry Regiment Caisson Platoon at Ft. Myer.

They also participated in a fitness challenge with JFHQ-NCR/MDW Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Williams.

"The New York Military Youth Cadets, Inc. is a non-profit multicultural community based organization. Our Division of Youth Services provides a military based program for boys and girls between the ages of twelve and eighteen years old," said Commander Alirio Orduna, coordinator of the New York Military Youth Cadets.

"Our objective is to develop self-confidence, discipline, respect for society, cultural awareness, fundamental leadership traits, and to perform veterans and community out-reach. The trip to Washington helped to accomplish several of our objectives as cadets were able to interact with the Soldiers at Joint Force Headquarters and The U.S. Army Military District of Washington. What a positive experience! These young men and women were able to observe true role models and they learned about teamwork and leadership," he said.

"One of the highlights of the trip was the 4 a.m. trip to assist members of the Caisson Platoon care for the stables. While the Caisson Platoon receives many visitors I was told this was the first time anyone had volunteered to help clean. It was indeed an honor to assist these Soldiers who take great pride in their work and mission as they render honors to servicemen and women who have served this great nation. It was an experience these young men and women will never forget. We sincerely appreciate everyone's efforts to ensure each cadet had a meaningful experience," said Orduna.
