FORT RUCKER Ala. - The post celebrates Hispanic Heritage month now through Oct. 15 with a variety of activities and events.
From music and dance to cultural food and events, there is something for everyone to enjoy, said Sgt. Maureen Jones, 164th Theater Aviation Operations Group noncommissioned officer retention.
"I'm really excited about it," Jones said. "There will be Zumba classes, dancing, the gate-to-gate run, different types of food at the (post exchange) and just a lot of fun for Families to enjoy."
This year, the 164th TAOG sponsors Hispanic heritage events throughout the month, said Sgt. 1st Class David Kintz, Garrison Equal Opportunity adviser. The kick-off event is Sept. 17 at the PX at 11:30 a.m.
"We invite everyone to participate in the events," Kintz said. "It's a perfect opportunity to learn about different ethnicities. Since we're such a culturally diverse Army, it's beneficial to know more about the brother or sister you're serving with."
The event includes Latin American food samplings and Zumba dance demonstrations, Kintz said. A drawing also takes place for couples to win free dance lessons.
A "So you think you can dance with the Latin stars'" dance competition at The Landing begins Sept. 30 at 6 p.m. until no one can dance anymore, Kintz said.
"The dance competition is new and should be a great time for those participating and the audience," Kintz said.
Dancers may participate as soloists, couples or groups. Performances must be Family-friendly, and routine time constraints depend upon the number of participants, Jones said. The first place winner will perform at the Hispanic Heritage Month luncheon Oct. 14.
Running enthusiasts and bicyclers can participate in the annual Gate-to-Gate race Oct. 2. Sign up for the 4.2-mile race is ongoing by visiting either the Fortenberry-Colton Physical Fitness Facility or Fort Rucker PFF. Registration costs $15 until Sept. 26 and $20 thereafter until day of the race. Bicyclers begin the course at 8:55 a.m. and runners start at 9 a.m.
The final event of Hispanic Heritage month is the Hispanic Heritage Month Luncheon at The Landing Oct. 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets are $11 per person and include entertainment, a Hispanic themed lunch and guest speaker Rich Lopez, Richco Consulting Service in Dothan owner. Tickets are currently on sale for the luncheon and can be purchased from each unit's equal opportunity leader or from the installation equal opportunity office, Kintz said.
