FORT BRAGG, N.C. - Fort Bragg has a reputation for listening to the voice of its Soldiers, but a Child, Youth and School Services action council also gives the chance to listen to the voice of its youth.
The Youth Action Council held its meeting July 26, at 1 p.m., at Tolson Youth Activities Center. YAC is comprised of youth at least 13 years old, said Iris Pierce, school liaison officer. The meeting was productive and helped youth to prepare for next year's, two-day Youth Leadership Conference, to be held in June.
At the YAC meeting, youth were able to discuss their likes and dislikes about the Youth Leadership Council which took place in June at Albritton Junior High School, Pierce said. The conference fosters leadership skills among youth and allows them, through workshops, to discuss issues that affect their quality of life as military-connected individuals.
Feedback from council members indicated that they enjoyed the conference's technology workshops and liked receiving advice from a financial expert about shopping and about researching college scholarships, added Pierce. As far as dislikes, teens said they would like to see more celebrities visit Fort Bragg and have personal choices about placement into specific workshop groups, usually determined based on topics of discussion.
Members would also like to receive more participation from residents who live on post, said Pierce. About 90 percent of those who take part in the conference do not live on post.
Upcoming events planned for the YAC include a college road tour in August, a shop for college workshop, military academies fair and homeschooling bee, all in October.
