FORT LEAVENWORTH, KAN. - Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, Commanding General of U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, promoted Col. Paul E. Funk II to the rank of Brigadier General in an Aug. 9 ceremony at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

Funk is Deputy Commanding General of the Combined Arms Center-Training (CAC-T) at Fort Leavenworth. His command delivers training programs, products and services to leaders and units in support of Army readiness. Wherever Army training occurs, the Combined Arms Center-Training helps make it happen.

Dempsey, who was Funk's commander on multiple assignments, described the new one-star general as "a terrific Soldier, husband and father and a great trainer - among the top two or three in our Army today. He understands what it takes to get our young men and women and their units ready to go off and do what they need to do."

In addition to his CAC-T leadership, Funk's 26-year Army career has included assignments as III Corps Chief of Staff; Brigade Commander for the 1st Brigade Combat Team (Ironhorse), 1st Cavalry Division in Iraq and at Fort Hood, Texas; and Squadron Commander for the 1st Squadron, 7th U.S. Cavalry unit at Fort Hood. He served multiple combat tours during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Desert Storm.

Among Funk's more recent accomplishments as Deputy Commanding General of the Combined Arms Center-Training:

Aca,!Ac Developing the Integrated Training Environment, a new technology to help commanders train effectively within time and budget restraints.

Aca,!Ac Strengthening virtual training, including Dismounted Soldier and Synthetic Environment Core (SE Core) development and continuing improvements to virtual simulations.

Aca,!Ac Enhancing training through gaming and new applications.

Aca,!Ac Development of online tools like the Army Training Network (https://atn.army.mil) and award-winning revamp of "My Training Tab" on Army Knowledge Online (https://www.us.army.mil/suite/page/50).

Aca,!Ac Developing Army doctrine, such as Field Manual 7-0, Full Spectrum Operations Mission Essential Tasks Lists.

Funk has a bachelor's degree in speech communications from Montana State University and a master's degree in Administration from Central Michigan University. He is the son of Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Paul E. Funk and Sheila Funk, who live in Copperas Cove, Texas. Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Funk was Commander of the 3rd Armored Division during the Persian Gulf War; Commanding General of the U.S. Army Armor Center at Fort Knox; and Commanding General of the U.S. Army III Corps at Fort Hood, Texas.

Brig. Gen. Funk's wife, Beth, is the daughter of Lt. Gen. (Ret.) John J. Yeosock and Betta Yeosock of Peachtree City, Ga. Yeosock was Commander of the U.S. Third Army during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm.

Brig. Gen. Funk's awards and decorations include three awards of the Legion of Merit, three awards of the Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, three awards of the Meritorious Service Medal, five awards of the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, the Defense of Saudi Arabia Medal and the Meritorious Unit Citation.
