FORT BELVOIR, Va. - The second annual Cardboard Regatta was held at Pool #1 Saturday. Entrants competed in the fastest time, best design and most spectacular sinking categories.
Tyler Kosa, 9, enlisted the aid of friend Brett Ballard, 12, to be his shipmate for the boat he designed. "I thought about asking my dad, but he would just have made the boat sink," Kosa said.
Ana McDonald, 11, crewed her boat with Loren Berger, 10. The two collaborated on the boat's design and paint and named it Lightning Thief. The boat started slow in the first time trial, but subsequently defeated contestants in the second race. Most of the boats held up to the races and quite a few crews vowed to be back next year with bigger and better boats.
