For 45 years, Army Community Services has been serving Soldiers, Civilian employees, Families and retirees.
On July 23, the U.S. Army Garrison ACS staff celebrated and continued their history of service by providing the community with food and various door prizes during an ACS birthday celebration.
The celebration, which took place in front of ACS, was held to honor accomplishments ACS has achieved throughout its 45-year history and to let the community know the organization will continue to serve, said Jocelyn Coleman, ACS director.
"We want people to understand how long we've been here, educate people on what we do and just celebrate," she said. Coleman said despite BRAC, USAG's ACS will continue to serve the community.
Old programs, such as job fairs, sexual assault prevention instruction and other outreaches, will continue, as will newer programs, such as the Survivor Outreach Services.
She added the birthday celebration, probably the last one of its kind to be held on Fort McPherson, provided a chance for people to celebrate these accomplishments as well as learn what ACS has planned for the future. During the event, celebrators enjoyed hot dogs, cake, bottled water and soda provided by the Fort McPherson commissary and prepared by the ACS staff.
Gifts, such as basketballs, board games, tool kits and a bicycle, were also distributed by raffle. Marshall Mitchell, chief of in-and out-processing at the ID Card Section at the Fort McPherson One Stop Processing Center, who won a 3-D kite, said he came to the event to support ACS.
"I worked in ACS overseas and know the good they do," he said. "I think ACS is one of the better organizations in the military. It's an excellent organization. ACS supports Soldiers and Families."
