Leaders recognized at Yongsan induction ceremony

YONGSAN GARRISON, South Korea - An induction ceremony was held here July 28 for the Sgt. Audie L. Murphy Club, Gen. Paik Sun-yup Leadership Award and Dr. Mary E. Walker Award.

The awardees and guests gathered at the Multipurpose Training Facility after a luncheon at Yongsan Main Post Club.

Gen. Paik Sun-yup didn't attended the ceremony, but 8th U.S. Army Deputy Commander Maj. Gen. Robert Williamson took his place.

A video titled Aca,!A"I am the SergeantAca,!A? showed how noncommissioned officers have served as leaders throughout the U.S. Army's history.

Soldiers in historic uniforms formed a v-shaped line on stage during the narration. Command Sgt. Maj. David R. Abbott, command sergeant major of Installation Management Command Korea, was the guest speaker for the ceremony.

Aca,!A"Do everything you can do both individually and collectively to improve your fox hole,Aca,!A? said Abbott.

Sgt. Audie L. Murphy, Gen. Paik Sun-yup and Dr. Mary E. Walker all led from the front.

Sgt. Audie L. Murphy was a war hero who earned a battlefield commission for his courage and leadership, as well as every medal for valor that America awards. He was also awarded three French medals and a Belgian medal during World War II. The Sergeant Audie Murphy Club inductees are NCOs who lead their Soldiers by example.

Gen. Paik Sun-yup is the first Republic of Korea Army four-star general. He participated in all ten of the major campaigns of the Korean War. The award is given to Korean Augmentation to the U.S. Army Soldiers.

Dr. Mary E. Walker is the only woman in United States history to receive the Medal of Honor. She served as an unpaid volunteer in various camps and a hospital for Native American troops. She set the standard for helping to improve quality of life. The award is given to civilian employees.
