RED RIVER ARMY DEPOT, Texarkana -- Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody, AMC commander shook numerous hands and visited with many RRAD workers during her July 8 visit to the depot.
Even though she had tried on three previous occasions, this was her first visit to Red River Army Depot since taking command of AMC.
The Commander made history twice on November 14, 2008 when she became the first woman to be promoted to the rank of four-star general in U.S. Armed Forces history and later that same day officially became the 17th commander, and first female leader, of the U.S. Army Materiel Command.
Dunwoody and three members of her staff visited production lines as part of the depot operations orientation. One of the lines visited was the mixed-model vehicle line -- a production line that has the capability to run several variants simultaneously.
As one of the first to implement the concept in a remanufacturing setting, RRAD first applied it to the HMMWV family of vehicles and has since expanded the capability to other production lines. The line visited is currently running the Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV), The Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck, HEMTT, and the Mine Resistant Ambush Protective vehicle, MRAP.
The visit also included a walk-through of the much heralded MRAP University. This unique facility provides extensive training on the operation and servicing of the MRAP to both soldiers and civilians. Operated by the MRAP Joint Project Office, the training facility meets the needs of all military services.
"Your numerous awards and recognitions are your credentials of being as good or better than private industry," said Dunwoody as she toured the award winning HMMWV production line.
