REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. -- Not many people can say they've worked at Redstone for half a century.
Dr. Bill Craig can.
Craig, director of the Software Engineering Directorate of the Aviation and Missile Research Development and Engineering Center, has received a certificate for his 50 years of government service.
But it's what he's done over those years that really matters.
Workers shared their thoughts about him during SED's recent Organization Day, where they raised more than $4,000 for Army Emergency Relief. They described his leadership, vision and how he cares about his work force.
"He is a good guy. He knows his people and he is humble," contracts specialist Alice Long said.
Craig has been the director of SED since 1988. He has nurtured it through significant growth, all the while ensuring the facilities don't lag behind. SED is opening its newest expansion to building 6264 within the next month. This expansion will give the directorate approximately 500,000 square feet of workspace.
The "campus," as SED's buildings are known to the workers, is still expanding. SED has a combined government and contractor work force of more than 1,800.
Administrative specialist Nancy Rostallan said Craig sees things for this organization and he lets people do their jobs.
According to Frank Blackwell, director of the Army Game Studio, "Dr. Craig sets the tone for and provides the flexibility to develop innovative solutions for the engineers to meet their customers' requirements."
The directorate has gained a Level 4 Software Engineering Institute's Software Capability Maturity Model.
"SED is working toward a Level 5 SEI Software Capability Maturity Model," deputy director Fred Reed said. "Dr. Craig has a certain innate foresight where he can look at a situation, dissect it and uncover solutions that no one else has thought of. He can come up with a path forward that is a win-win."
Kathy Crawford, configuration management specialist, said "He is a mentor and a good friend. Dr. Craig doesn't micro-manage his workforce, he believes they are very capable and will get the job done. He always knows they are working for the Warfighter."
