FORT HOOD, Texas - Friends and family members gathered at the 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) chapel July 13 to pay their respects to Spc. Lacy Ann Null.

Null, a mental health specialist with the 21st Combat Support Hospital, 1st Medical Brigade, was described as having a knack for teaching, she was at ease in front of groups, and she was clinically strong.

"You wanted to be around her," said a letter from her former unit, the 85th Medical Detachment (Combat Stress Control), which is currently deployed to Iraq. "She arrived with a desire to help others and to serve her country and her bright smiling attitude radiated and pulled people in."

The letter went on to describe that she was always willing to help others in the unit, always checking to see how others were doing, and she was willing to assist.

"I was privileged to mentor Specialist Null," said Capt. Erin Krebs, the 21st CSH company commander. "She consistently remained focused on her family, especially her daughter Lilyanna. Just weeks ago she was looking forward to enrolling in classes for nursing."

Sgt. Anthony Curtis, Null's squad leader, described her as a doer, not a complainer. He said he could put her on any detail and she would never complain.

"It wasn't hard to lead Lacy," he said. "Her personality was peaceful. She had a soft spirit, and she was very loving."

Curtis spoke of how excited she was to start college, to earn a nursing degree, and how much she loved her daughter.

"You will be missed but not forgotten," he said.
