FORT HOOD, Texas - Capt. Robin Boehringer, an avid runner, along with Soldiers from the 263rd Maintenance Company, 553rd Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 4th Sustainment Brigade, 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) recently provided support for the Blue Bonnet Race.
Boehringer, an operations officer, teamed up with Millie Lands, an event planner for Morale, Welfare and Recreation to set up the run / walk, which began at Fort Hood Stadium. The event was staffed by volunteers from the Leopard Battalion and the community and featured a five and ten kilometer course.
"Millie and I are good friends," Boehringer said. "I was telling her how hard it was to get personnel to staff the events and we decided to request volunteers from the battalion. Our plan was to get the 553rd CSSB to sponsor the Great Place Amazing Race."
The Blue Bonnet race, which is the second of three marathons in The Great Place Amazing Race Series, had participants ranging from children to runners as young as 60.
A group called Highway 8 and the 1st Cavalry Division Band performed for the runners.
"We had estimated and prepared for 200 runners to participate, but we accommodated more than 300," said Boehringer.
She added that the plans were limited to the availability of manpower, but volunteers from the 263rd , along with outreach from the community, contributed to the success of the event.
"The Blue Bonnet Race is another prime example of how Soldiers and MWR are constantly working together to unite Solders and their families," said Boehringer.
At the finish line, three runners from each category and the overall winners were presented with trophies. For fun, each champion was required to show their spirit and do pushups before receiving their trophy.
"It was basically a way to build the morale in the Leopard Battalion, help MWR, and hopefully bring Soldiers and family members out on a Saturday to enjoy a nice family environment," said Capt. Kehmes Lands, chaplain.
