Connecting Soldiers to Digital Applications

What is it'

Connecting Soldiers to Digital Applications (CSDA) is an initiative sponsored by the Army Capabilities Integration Center (ARCIC) and the Army CIO/G6, with support from Army Training and Doctrine Command, the TRADOC deputy commanding general for Initial Military Training, and other Army organizations. CSDA is exploring the value of providing Soldiers digital applications on hand-held devices (smart phones) for education and training, administrative functions, reference, and selected operational support.

What is the Army doing'

In phase 1, the Army launched several pilot projects, using a variety of smart phones, to evaluate applications for training, leader development, job aids, and administrative functions. In addition to digital devices, these pilots furnish digital content, a digital portal and data repository, and digital network services. Pilot sites include the Army Evaluation Task Force at Fort Bliss, Texas, where 200 phones are going to one company-sized organization for field applications such as help identifying friend or foe. Other pilots are focused on Initial Military Training, including the Military Police Basic Officers Leadership Course, the Engineer One-Station Unit Training and the Patriot Launcher Crewman Advanced Individual Training.

Why is it important to the Army'

Digital applications offer a convenient and flexible approach to training and information access (helping foster a "persistent learning environment",) with potential for resource and time savings and enhanced learning. The technology also holds promise for access to critical operational information and tools in the field.

What is the way ahead'

CSDA phase 2 will assess the value of digital apps for tactical operations. Future efforts will include a gateway and base stations to provide integration with tactical radio networks and battle command systems.
