FORT HOOD, Texas - Long lines and lots of questions greeted 'Greywolf' Soldiers during Fort Hood's Independence Day Festival, here, July 4.
3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division Soldiers answered questions about the Abrams Main Battle Tank , the 155mm Self-Propelled Howitzer and the Bradley Fighting Vehicle displayed at Fort Hood's Hood Stadium during the festival.
One non-commissioned officer said it was nice to be able to explain to families about what their fathers, brothers and sons do to secure their way of life.
"Part of our job is to make sure that families are safe. The weapons systems displayed behind me are a huge part of what we use to do that," said Sgt. Robert Rangel, a gunner with 2nd Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment.
As people climbed on-top-of and into the equipment, "Greywolf" Soldiers explained their basic operations.
"A lot of people are coming out here to see the tank - the tanks are a lot of fun. I love my job and take a lot of pride in it. It is fun for me to talk about what I do and perhaps recruit some future tankers," said Spc. Jacob Brown, with 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment.
For 9-year-old Taylor Crigler, the future as a tanker is certainly a possibility.
"When I grow up I want to be a Soldier and shoot a tank," said Crigler.
Earlier, the salute battery from 2nd Bn., 82nd Field Artillery Regt., fired a single volley for each state in a fifty-gun salute to the Union and ended the evening with volleys in concert with the "1812 Overture" and fireworks.
