FORT RUCKER, Ala. -- Soldiers caring for Exceptional Family Member Program relatives who have not updated their records in the past three years must complete this process by July 16, according to Lyster Army Health Clinic staff.

Updates are required every three years, or as conditions change, according to Sgt. 1st Class John Stahlschmidt, LAHC senior clinical noncommissioned officer.

EFMP qualified individuals are Soldiers' spouses, children or other Family members with chronic or long-term medical conditions requiring treatment, said Lt. Col. Wendy Campbell, nursing deputy commander.

EFMP applicable conditions include everything from learning disabilities, asthma, high blood pressure or cerebral palsy.

Registration is required for Soldiers whose Family members need specialized, continuous medical care for those conditions and many others, officials said.

It helps ensure these individuals receive the treatments they need. Having the proper paperwork also assists with obtaining any special equipment or necessary housing modifications, EFMP staff said.

"EFMP is a requirement (and) a way of promising to take care of Soldiers (and Families)," said Col. Dana Renta, Clinical Services deputy commander. "We're here for Soldiers and Families. It's our pleasure to take care of them."

The program falls in line with the Army Family Covenant, he noted, by following the Army's promise to take care of military members' loved ones.

Stahlschmidt is contacting Soldiers who have not updated EFMP records within the past three years with packets disseminated through installation units.

Servicemembers should fill out the required paperwork - which takes only a few minutes - and return the information to their commanders or EFMP staff by the end of next week, he said.

Soldiers also receive e-mails through Army Knowledge Online accounts before their records require updates.

Soldiers should also contact EFMP staff to enroll new Family members or unregister relatives if they no longer require program assistance, said Jeffery Moultry, EFMP coordinator and special needs adviser.

Exceptional Family members are not required to be present during any enrollment or update processes, Renta noted. Soldiers or their spouses may complete the process for program members.

The EFMP office is located in LAHC, Rm. F-101A, within the Primary Care department. Hours are Mondays-Fridays from 7:45 to 11:45 a.m. and 1 to 3:45 p.m. For more information, call 255-7431.
