FORT RUCKER, Ala. -- For some, "CSI" is a favorite television show. For Fort Rucker athletes, however, it stands for Cardiovascular Strength Intervals - a fun class that helps them get or stay in shape.

"It's a high fat-burning (workout)," said Fortenberry-Colton Physical Fitness Facility Instructor Aimee McDonough. "It'll boost your metabolism."

She said no two classes are the same, but all focus on fast, intense interval training with few breaks in between exercises. Sometimes participants work against their own body weights, but she also includes medicine and BOSU balls, weight bars, free weights and other equipment.

Calories burned during the 75-minute classes vary by individual. McDonough, a tall, lean person, said she burns 400-500 calories each session.

Exerting back-to-back, quick bursts of energy can also raise individuals' metabolisms to higher levels for up to a day or more after the workout, she noted.

Laura Temp said she recently started attending PFF group classes for motivation and accountability to stay in shape. Her busy flight school schedule also pushed her to give CSI a try.

"(I) still need to do something for (myself). It gives me a break from studying," Temp said.

The overall improvements to her physique are what keep CSI regular Izumi Brady coming back.

"I like (performing) cardio and weights at the same time. It's not boring. It's never the same," the military spouse said. "I couldn't do push-ups (when I started). Now I can do 10. I never did weights (before CSI). My arms are now toned."

PFF staff member Aerial Doaty said instructor direction helps her get more out of the workouts, and encouraged those desiring fitness assistance to consider attending CSI.

"It forces me to work myself (harder)," she said. "I also feel better. I have more energy and I see more form in my arms."

Sessions cost $3 each.

CSI classes are offered Thursdays from 8:15 to 9:30 a.m. throughout July. To register, call 255-3794.
