FORT BELVOIR, Va. - Children from Fort Belvoir's School Age Services were treated to free bread and vegetables June 16, as the installation's USO kicked off its first farmers market for 2010.

Boys and girls lined up with shopping bags in hand for potatoes, cabbage and cake sheets. While the USO has conducted free farmers markets before for active-duty family members, Emily Jane McLoughlin, USO center coordinator, said this was the first time pre-school children were invited.

Teachers from SAS were pleased with the invitation and said the occasion was a great opportunity for children to learn about good nutrition. The USO plans on making the farmers market a regular event the third Wednesday of each month, McLoughlin said.

"These kids are adorable," remarked Sandy Fitzsimmons, a volunteer with the USO since 1999. "I love it when they get so excited over something."
