FORT RILEY, Kan. - "It's more just getting them educated without them really knowing that they are learning," said Jeanne Schantz about the 2010 Camp 911 June 16 and 17at Camp Brown south of Abilene, Kan.
Schantz is a member of the Dickinson County Emergency Medical Services and co-organizer with Jennifer Schaput, Abilene Fire Department, for the event. The Fort Riley Fire Department volunteered to help teach participating members about safety.
This is the sixth year the event has been hosted by Dickinson County EMS.
"It gives the kids kind of a fun way to learn safety information and gives them something to do during the summer," Schantz said.
More than 40 students from five school districts across Dickinson County attended this year's camp.
In order to be chosen to attend the students had to write a 50-word essay on why they wanted to attend or why they are interested in an emergency services career, Schantz said.
Volunteers from various organizations assisted with the camp providing different demonstrations and talks.
FRFD has its safety trailer on site and spoke to the kids about fire safety in the house and what to do if a fire occurs.
Dickinson County EMS talked about first aid and CPR; the Saline County Mounted Patrol spoke to the kids about water safety; and the Abilene Fire Department discussed fire safety. A speaker also was present to talk about lawn mower safety, and the Kansas Highway Patrol talked about seat belt use.
Also assisting with the event were members of the Community Emergency Response Team and Memorial Hospital in Abilene.
The two-day camp also included gun safety, self defense, a vehicle extrication demonstration along with a Life Star helicopter fly-in.
The camp is free based on donations received from community members.
