WIESBADEN, Germany - Twenty-four athletes from the U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden were among 72,741 runners in this year's J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge in Frankfurt June 9.

The annual 5.6-kilometer race, which encourages comprehensive community fitness and resiliency in the workforce and raises money for various charities, is held all over the world including seven cities in the United States, London, Sydney, Singapore and Johannesburg. Having grown into one of the largest events in the world, when it was first introduced in Frankfurt in 1993 the race only featured 527 starters.

Like last year's team, this year's USAG Wiesbaden squad included U.S. and host nation employees, Soldiers and family members.

Christine Mbakeh, with the garrison's Directorate of Public Works, organized the garrison teams with support from Wiesbaden's Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation as a way to bring employees together for fitness and a good cause.

This year's largest team included 1,936 athletes from the Commerzbank, followed by 1,313 participants from Lufthansa.

While it took some 40 minutes for the final runners to even reach the start of the race, with so many people packed into Frankfurt's downtown streets, the fastest athletes to get away from the start were Christophe Chayriguet who finished in 16 minutes and 36 seconds for the men and Jenny Schulz in 19:25 for the women.
