U.S. Army Garrison Public Affairs Office Whether first-time customers or returning patrons, when visitors walk through the doors of the Army and Air Force Exchange Services barbershop on Fort McPherson, they are greeted with laughter and spontaneity.
And that's just how the barbers like it, said John Carter, AAFES barber.
For Carter, the barbershop is a place where people from throughout the fort go to have fun and talk.
Carter said he has known his way around the barbershop his whole life, and the social aspect of the barbershop is the quality that keeps most customers coming back.
"We talk about everything from relationships and personal problems to sports. We pretty much solve world peace here every day," said Carter with a laugh, adding the long hours of the job do not bother him due to the benefit gained by interacting with his customers.
Barbershop customer Master Sgt. Sylvester Hart, operations and plans NCOIC, U.S. Army Forces Command G-6, said he could not agree more with Carter, although he said the good price of an AAFES haircut also helps to keep him coming back.
For $9.40, customers can get a basic hair cut, with additional services costing extra. Hart said he enjoys seeing other regulars and talking about sports and current events with his favorite barbers.
He also said every installation has a barber on post and the "shop" is one of the first things people look for.
While every installation may have a barbershop, the camaraderie at Fort McPherson's barbershop is incomparable, said Carter, adding the lasting relationship between barber and customer is vital to its success.
"We'll be here till the end," said Carter.
