CRANE, Ind. - More than 400 Soldiers arrived at Crane Army Ammunition Activity June 5 to participate in the latest national military exercise called "Golden Cargo" which will take place this month at the base.

Soldiers assigned to various transportation companies from across the country will test their mettle at the large Indiana base, as they pack, load and haul military munitions. This year, Marine Reservists will also participate alongside the Soldiers during the exercise.

Loaded onto trailers, munitions will be hauled from the Crane Naval Support Activity eventually ending at other munitions plants across the country. This movement of military munitions is taking place all across the U.S. this month as the military reconfigures its ammunition stock to better align munitions to meet the military's strategic planning goals.

On the practical side, Golden Cargo allows military members who specialize in logistics and explosives to receive hands-on training while providing the military a much needed service in re-positioning vital munitions.

Golden Cargo 2010 is the latest in a series of annual training operations sponsored by the Joint Munitions Command and executed by Soldiers of the United States Army Reserve, U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Navy.

This year's exercise organizer is the 310th Expeditionary Sustainment Command (ESC) headquartered in Indianapolis, Ind.

CAAA was established in Oct. 1977 and is a tenant of the Navy Region Midwest, Naval Support Activity Crane. The Army activity maintains ordnance professionals and infrastructure to receive, store, ship, produce, renovate and demilitarize conventional ammunition, missiles and related components.
