Celebrating the Strength of the Nation: the Army's 235th Birthday

What is it'

This year marks the 235th birthday of the United States Army. June 14, 1775 saw the creation of the Continental Army to secure the Nation's independence. Since then, generations of Americans have stepped forward to defend our freedoms and global security. These courageous men and women have assisted other countries in protecting their rights, as well as promoting peace. The Soldiers have emerged stronger, and their willingness to serve builds a better future for others.

What has the Army done'

Since 1775, Americans have come forward to protect and care for our Nation. From the Revolutionary War to today's current operations, the Soldiers have remained "Army Strong," committed to the Army values - loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage. These men and women have selflessly and continuously defended our rights at home, and have protected the rights of our friends and allies in various conflicts large and small throughout the world. The Army has more than once led the way in disaster relief, peacekeeping operations and stability operations to promote peace throughout the global community. The Army's contributions to our nation reach far beyond the battlefield. The Army has made far-reaching contributions to society in science, exploration and medicine.

What continued efforts does the Army have planned for the future'

The Army will continue defending the Nation while assisting the global community in promoting peace by playing an important part in humanitarian assistance, civil support, security assistance and anti- and counter-terrorism.

Why is this important to the Army'

Celebrating the Army as the Strength of the Nation gives us a chance to thank the Soldiers, civilians, families and veterans who have the sacrifices to achieve the level of excellence that is associated with Army Strong. Being Army Strong encompasses a resolute spirit, and high ethical and moral values, as well as physical endurance and mental preparedness. These traits live up to the expectations of our leaders, as well as the Nation's founders. Our entire Army family is what makes America's Army: The Strength of the Nation.
