FORT BRAGG, N.C. - One year and $851,000 later, the newly renovated Dragon Lanes reopened its doors with a celebration on April 7.

The funds for the upgrades came from the Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Command.

The FMWRC receives money from bowling alleys and other MWR run facilities that charge for services. The money Families spend at FMWR facilities goes into the FMWR funds for renovations such as this.

Besides colorful new highlights and decorations, the money was also spent on a new, themed snack bar, new seating and new carpet, said Ruby Bonapart, a manager at Dragon Lanes.

"The Dragon Lanes atmosphere is much nicer after the renovations," said Lamark Wylie, a property book officer for 4th Psychological Operations Group.

The Strike Zone snack bar's improvements include a larger, healthier menu, Bonapart said.

Wylie said he enjoys the new healthier menu items the Strike Zone offers during lunch.

Since the renovations, the bowling alley has seen a large increase in customers and funds, Bonapart said.

To further entice customers, Bonapart has been working on setting up several new activities for Dragon Lanes.

Extreme bowling or "glow bowl" is new to the bowling alley. Bonapart said she hopes it will draw in the teen population.

Other new planned activities will include children's leagues, summertime Family bowling, and electronic bingo.
