PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. - Philip Samuels and Pamela Sheehan were recognized with an ARDEC coin as this year's ARDEC Science Fellowship recipients by ARDEC Director Joseph Lannon at the ARDEC staff meeting of senior leaders May 24.

The ARDEC Science Fellowship Program was started in 2009 by ARDEC's Armament University to encourage and provide financial support to doctoral level work in engineering and the sciences that advances current and future armament technologies.

Samuels is a chemical engineer in Energetics and Warheads. He will use the fellowship period at Stevens Institute of Technology to continue his work on integrating direct-write technologies (printable explosives) for use in booster-less main charge explosives.

Sheehan is an environmental engineer in Demilitarization and Environmental Technology. She will use the fellowship period to complete her dissertation on "Chemical Oxidation and Bioremediation of Hydrophobic Organic Compounds" at Rutgers University.

The fellowship program promotes the development of outstanding science and engineering for armaments through full-time research and study. It provides a one-year sabbatical with full salary, benefits, books and fees for the recipients to focus on their doctoral program. The ARDEC Factor IV panel serves as the selection committee for the Fellowship. The recipients are chosen through a rigorous application process in which they must clearly show how their doctoral work will benefit ARDEC and the U.S. Army. After completing their fellowships, Samuels and Sheehan will present progress reports on their work to the Factor IV panel.
