FORT BELVOIR, Va. - Mount Vernon High School's Marketing Department held its annual spring fashion show May 26 at Mount Vernon Country Club.

This year's show, entitled "United We Stand, Together We Serve," had a special meaning behind it as it was influenced by the military and the high school's ongoing relationship with neighboring Fort Belvoir.

Nardos King, principal of MVHS, kicked off the event by introducing honored guests Dr. Scott Brabrand, Fairfax County assistant superintendent for Cluster IV schools; and Belvoir's Installation Command Sgt Maj. Gabriel Berhane. Ex-MVHS Principal Mike Skinner also attended.

"I hope, as we go through each of the scenes of the show, we can reflect on the different pieces of history," Brabrand said. "The big thing that unites this community here more than anything else is the notion of shared service and sacrifice.

"The education of our young people is a true and noble service and it endures great sacrifice, Brabrand said. "And, serving in the U.S. military also is a noble service that entails great sacrifice. We are proud of the continued collaboration between this school and Fort Belvoir."

Berhane represented the Belvoir Garrison Command Group and showed his appreciation for the students and the event.

"Belvoir would like to thank everybody, especially the students, for all their effort in preparing for this wonderful event," Berhane said. "We are very proud of our partnership with Mount Vernon and we look forward to continuing our bond and partnership in the future."

Students Lauren Johnson, DeAndre Harness and Christina Brown produced the show.

Gus Person, Belvoir's installation historian, opened the show with a presentation of "Uniforms through time," a history of military uniforms covering four centuries of service.

Next was a fashion line by the students, inspired by military life.

Members of the MVHS JROTC Color Guard performed a tribute to the Warriors in Transition.

The students then unveiled a T-shirt highlighting many of the military's values, such as honor, loyalty and integrity.

MVHS ROTC students William Pope, Caleb Masson, Jimmy Robinson and Michael Parker then presented what they are hoping to accomplish in the U.S. military beyond high school.

The last scene of the evening was presented by MV students and was inspired by military wives and families.

King closed out the event by presenting Berhane the Fort Belvoir and MVHS Promise Certification.
