PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - Safety Day came to the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center and the Presidio of Monterey May 28 with live demonstrations and interactive events for military and civilians to learn from as a part of Safety Awareness Month.
"We have a very interesting community with different cultures and safety cultures, so safety is different for each country," said John Rice, installation safety director.
DLIFLC schools participated in the event with stations highlighting safety procedures and tips, mostly featuring recreational activities and events.
"We consider the students very safe in class," Rice said. "Our concern is off duty."
Personnel from the California Highway Patrol and the Monterey County Sheriff's Department joined with the U.S. Coast Guard Station Monterey and POM Fire Department in sponsoring events highlighting boat, fire, vehicle and food safety.
The Monterey-Salinas Transit service featured its new bus to promote the free bus service for the Presidio of Monterey and Ord Military Community personnel, which reduces congestion and, therefore, accidents.
To teach the methods of extraction from a vehicle, POMFD personnel used an old van as a demonstration model and proceeded to take the vehicle apart with their rescue tools that included the "jaws of life."
Army and Air Force Exchange Service and the POM safety office staff were on hand displaying safety products and suppling free safety-themed knick knacks and treats for the participants.
Rice credited his staff for arranging the set up of the four-hour, annual event and said that if the service members and civilians took away just one safety tip from the whole event, they accomplished their goal.
"The health and welfare of our personnel is the garrison commander's number one priority and that's why we have such a strong safety program," Rice said.
Rice said that regardless of the success of this year's event, there are always ways to improve.
He said that while the turn out was "outstanding," he appreciates any feedback. To do this, Rice invited service members and their families as well as POM employees to stop by the safety office in the Tin Barn.
