Iowans are being called to active duty in record numbers. This year, approximately 3,500 reserve and National Guard troops are being called up - a mobilization that is the largest since World War II. This will have a significant impact on our state. With input from the American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Sons of the American Legion, and the Legion Riders, we have joined together to be ready to assist our Soldiers and their Families.

Operation Troop Support will provide contact information for the Soldiers and their Families, a "take with them" packet that will have vital information, a touch of Iowa, and an American Pocket Flag to be given to each Soldier. An e-mail address, troopsupport@ialegion.org, has been established for the Soldiers and their Families to contact us for whatever they may need. We will attend deployment ceremonies, make our services available and known to both Soldier and Family members, and promote the support of our troops.

We need your help to make this work throughout the state. Please complete the volunteer form if you are willing to be a local contact should the need arise. Let's make our gifts, our talents, and our services available to our Soldiers and their Families. You personally may not be able to do what the family may need, but you have contacts that can. Please be a part of the network.

Also, make contact with the Family Readiness Groups and the reserve and National Guard units in your area. Let them know we are here for them. Ask to be involved in pre-deployment briefings to make our citizen Soldiers and their Families aware of the services we provide.

The American Legion Family has a history of supporting our veterans and their Families. Let us now make every effort to lead the nation by giving our support to those who are serving our country now.
