Wilson Arena scored a goal in overtime to propel the Internationals to a 1-0 win against Rock Force in a regular season soccer game Monday at Doughboy Stadium.
The Internationals of the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation had more than five scoring opportunities and failed to score on an open goal in the first half, while Rock Force, 2nd Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, had four scoring opportunities. But, by the end of the first half, the game remained scoreless.
In the second half, both teams had several scoring opportunities again, but were unable to capitalize, sending the teams into overtime.
Arena sealed an Internationals win getting the ball past Rock Force's goalie for the win.
"It was a defensive battle from both teams - That's why neither team could score in the beginning," Internationals' coach Jose Guandique said. "Toward the end, we kept a solid defense and we were able to make a goal."
Arena, who made the winning goal, said his team did well on both offense and defense.
"We had good passes, team work and good defense," he said.
The Internationals played Rock Force in another game Monday, winning 6-0. With the two wins, the Internationals earned a spot in the Commander's Cup tournament, while Rock Force fell short and will not play.
The Commander's Cup tournament will begin at 6 p.m. Monday at Doughboy Stadium with the championship game slated for 7:15 p.m. Wednesday at Doughboy Stadium. Spectators are welcome.
