WASHINGTON (Army News Service May 13, 2010) -- Members and supporters of the Armed Services YMCA, and service members, gathered May 13 to honor winners of the annual Art and Essay contest on Capitol Hill.
The contest was open to military children from kindergarten through 12th grade. Winners received a savings bond and their work was displayed in the Russell House Office Building and in Baltimore/Washington Thurgood Marshall Airport.
"It's a really great feeling," said Lorenzo Devon Williams, first place Air Force art winner, who traveled from Maxwell Air Force Base with his parents Dawn and Master Sgt. Lorenzo Williams.
The winners were recognized at ASYMCA's annual recognition luncheon
"It was just a surprise all the way around," said Maj. Patricia Richter, of the New Jersey National Guard. Her daughter Amanda won first place in the essay contest.
The ASYMCA supports service members and their families all over the world with various programs.
"We compliment or supplement the things they [Army family services] do," said S. Frank Gallo, ASYMCA national executive director. "If they have not got enough of something we'll deliver it. If they can't deliver something, we will try to deliver it."
