ANNISTON ARMY DEPOT, Ala. - Maj. John Spurlock was awarded the bronze star, first oak leaf, during a ceremony here on April 29 for exceptional meritorious service performed in Iraq. The oak leaf denotes this as Spurlock's second awarding of the bronze star.
Spurlock was the first member of the 637th Contingency Contracting Team to arrive at Anniston Army Depot in July 2008. He provided key contracting support for the installation's development of the Assault Breacher Vechicle and Joint Assault Bridge, two unique programs in which the depot serves as the prime systems integrator.
In April 2009, he deployed for a year to serve as chief of contracting for a multinational division in Iraq. There, Spurlock was instrumental in establishing contracts for construction projects as well as the delivery of services and commodities.
According to the award justification, his efforts increased security and protection of the Iraqi borders.
"This is a very auspicious occasion and a very, very prestigious award," said Col. S. B. Keller, depot commander, as she presented the bronze star to Spurlock.
Spurlock thanked his civilian and military co-workers for the time each of them invested in teaching him about contracting services.
"I came here not knowing anything and I listened. I listened to each one of you," he said. "For anything I've achieved, I've been standing on your shoulders."
Upon his return stateside in April, Spurlock learned he would soon leave his co-workers again. On May 10, he joined the 626th Contingency Contracting Team, Redstone Arsenal, as a team leader.
