RED CLOUD GARRISON- Spouses were awarded coins for their contributions and sacrifices they have made for Soldiers during a Military Spouse Appreciation Day gathering at the Red Cloud Garrison's Pear Blossom Cottage May 7.

The spouses gathered to celebrate the day with food, fellowship and fun. They talked about some of their struggles and sacrifices and how they have overcome them to support their Soldier.

For their contributions throughout the years, each of the spouses received a coin from Command Sgt. Maj. Peter D. Burrowes, 2nd Infantry Division, command sergeant major. They also received a bag of 'goodies' including a purse, makeup, perfume and other items from Ken Limtiaco, Area I Army and Air Force Exchange Service general manager.

"Military spouses should be appreciated every day," said Donna Winzenried, wife of Command Sgt. Maj. Robert A. Winzenreid, U.S. Forces Korea, Combined Forces Command and 8th U.S. Army command sergeant major. "We travel, cook, clean and volunteer. Some wives are pregnant and they have to move to foreign places like Korea to have their child. And even with all these tasks, we are still there to comfort our Soldiers when they get home and cheer them up when they have a hard day."

That point wasn't lost on 2ID's top enlisted Soldier. Burrowes said he is very grateful for the spouses and all they contribute to the morale of Soldiers.

"The spouses play a big role in a Soldiers life," Burrowes said. "For a Soldier to have someone who can give them a high volume of comfort and support can be very uplifting."

The spouse appreciation event concluded with cake and punch, and a raffle for a free manicure and pedicure at a nail salon.
