FORT BENNING, Ga.- Looking to recycle paint or that old bathtub from your home renovation project'
Instead of throwing away household waste and hazardous materials, your recyclables could help units on post and benefit Morale, Welfare and Recreation programs.
The Department of Public Works will hold a Household Waste Amnesty Day from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. May 19.
Waste and hazardous materials will be accepted from military personnel, Department of Defense civilians, contractors and family members living on and off post.
This is the first amnesty day geared specifically toward households, Ted Williams said.
Williams, hazardous waste management program manager, said the inspiration for the amnesty day came from fielding phone calls from families unsure of how to dispose of old paints, solvents and fluorescent light bulbs.
"They want to do the right thing, so we are there to assist them and protect the environment," he said.
Williams said two locations will accept items, the Centralized Hazardous Material Control Center and a satellite location in the Building 6 parking lot. The CHMCC is responsible for storing, tracking, issuing and disposing of hazardous waste.
Theresa Hamilton said materials such as paints, adhesives and octane boosters, could benefit units with small budgets who need these items. The hazardous material center runs a turn-in and re-issue program that allows units to sign out materials at no cost.
"It reduces the amount of waste (the installation) generates," she said.
Some items at the amnesty day may end up at the Material Recycling Facility in Harmony Church, which has an aggressive re-sell program, with proceeds benefiting MWR programs, said Ellis Leeder, the air, noise and MRF manager for the Directorate of Public Works' Environmental Management Division.
If families miss amnesty day, Hamilton said not to worry, the hazardous material and recycling centers are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Centralized Hazardous Materials Control Center
For: Items such as aerosols, paints, household cleaners, car batteries, fluorescent lights and fire extinguishers.
Where: Building 377, on 10th Mountain Division Road across from the Veterinary Clinic on Main Post.
Prohibited items: Pyrotechnics, ammunition and used needles.
