REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. - Volunteers from the U.S. Army Security Assistance command's Adopt-A-School program were honored at a thank-you luncheon at Farley Elementary School April 28.

Employees who participate in the program enjoyed a lunch with Principal Donna White and the school's faculty.

"It was such a blessing to me that I was able to reach out and participate in this program. I think I was more excited than the kids were," said Lenard Dotson, AMC Fellow.

"The program luncheon was absolutely fantastic," said Christella Green, USASAC FOIA officer. "The hospitality, theme and food were excellent."

The USASAC Adopt-A-School program started as a way for employees to give back to the community.

"I can't say enough good things about the entire mentor program between USASAC and Farley Elementary," said Shawn Drake, Japan country program manager.

Thirteen USASAC employees make weekly visits, during work hours, to tutor approximately 20 students in math and reading.

"Tutoring the youth is truly a rewarding experience," said Terry Norman, USASAC country program manager.

"It was a very rewarding experience to be able to help kids! I think the kids and I both looked forward to our tutoring sessions," said Sharon Spinks, USASAC country program manager.

The program has received enthusiastic support from USASAC senior staff.

"I've enjoyed working with Mrs Brown's 2nd grade class at Farley Elementary. I never get over how appreciative the kids are as I enter into their classroom, I'm always greeted with smiling faces and hugs from those I tutor or mentor, seeing the effect of me being there assures me that I'm making a difference and that's the only thanks I need," said Col. Tommy Lancaster, USASAC chief of staff.

The tutoring program at Farley is just one of the outreach programs planned by USASAC. In the near future, USASAC hopes to donate office equipment and computers to local schools and universities.
