SCHINNEN, Netherlands - The philosopher Voltaire once said, "Appreciation is a wonderful thing; it makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well." No day better exemplifies that statement than Military Spouse Appreciation Day, May 7.
First proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan in 1984, Military Spouse Appreciation Day honors the contributions and sacrifices of military spouses around the world. It is now observed on the Friday before Mother's Day every year.
"Showing appreciation for military spouses need not be something that's done only once annually, but the special day of recognition gives an opportunity to do something a little extra, take the time to say 'thank you, and to honor military spouses for the sacrifices they make in support of service members' commitment to their country," said Suzanne Roberts, Schinnen's Family Advocacy Educator.
Schinnen's Army Community Service makes this easy and inexpensive with Military Spouse Appreciation Coupon Books, available free to service members and military spouses from all branches of the Armed Services. The coupons entitle the military spouse to things like a bubble bath, a dinner or a movie. The coupon books may be picked up at Schinnen's ACS, Bldg. 39, anytime during the month of May (while supplies last). For more information, call ACS at 0031-46-443-7500.
Geilenkirchen's Airmen & Family Readiness Center also hosts a special open house, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., May 7 to honor military spouses with a free lunch and lots of giveaways. The event is open to all service members, military spouses and family members from all branches of the Armed Services serving in the Tri-Border area.
