FORT BELVOIR, Va. - If you have ever been curious about kayaking, the opportunity to learn is as close as Benyaurd Indoor Pool. Team River Runner, a local non-profit organization, teaches kayaking skills to get you on the water and keep you safe.

The course begins with a boat orientation, introductions to emergency procedures and the proper use of safety equipment, along with different paddling techniques. Advanced outings on the Potomac River and the C&O Canal include whitewater technique instruction. The self-based learning allows students to attempt challenges within their comfort zone.

1st Lt. John Reid, 29th Infantry Division (Light), was in the pool Wednesday attempting rollovers and leans. He was practicing in preparation to enter a kayaking, biking and trail running event. "I just turned 30, so I wanted to challenge myself with an adventure sport that I had never attempted. This has been a rewarding and fun activity," Reid said.

The biweekly course is for Wounded Warriors and their families to find health, healing and promote physical activities and challenges. The course is open to all servicemembers and their families pending space availability.
