FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas -- First celebrated on April 22, 1970, Earth Day was the largest grassroots movement in U.S. history with over 20 million Americans involved in environmental activities.
Some of the effects the Earth Day movement can be seen locally.
San Antonio Water System has a very proactive conservation program with multiple water-saver rebates. City Public Service Energy offers energy savings rebates and energy reduction tips. The City of San Antonio offers an easy to use recycling program.
Fort Sam Houston's Earth Day celebration includes:
April 14: Tree dedication ceremony, Cole Middle School entrance, 3 p.m.
April 18: Visit DPW's booth during the Fiesta for educational materials and environmentally friendly items. The new FSH electric vehicles will be on display.
April 22: Recycle at the PX/Commissary parking lot from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
Recycling items:
- Batteries
- Toner cartridges
- Scrap electronic equipment
- Cell phones
Disposal items:
- Paint
- Aerosol cans
- Unwanted household chemicals (must be identified with MSDS or label. DPW will NOT accept unidentifiable liquids or other materials)
DPW will NOT accept the following items:
- Ammunition
- Firearms
- Fireworks
- Unknown chemicals
- Medical items or syringes of any kind
- Drugs (prescription or over-the-counter)
Items accepted for recycling, reuse or disposal must be from on-post housing or office space and from post residents and employees only. Items from off-post sources will not be accepted.
