LETTERKENNY ARMY DEPOT, Pa. -- Letterkenny Army Depot recently received the Army Superior Unit Award. A ceremony was held in Building 350 to honor employees.

The Army Superior Unit Award is awarded for outstanding meritorious performance of a unit during peacetime (defined as any period during which wartime or combat awards are not authorized in the geographical area in which the mission was executed) in a difficult and challenging mission under extraordinary circumstances.

The unit must display such outstanding devotion and superior performance of exceptionally difficult tasks to set it apart from and above other units with similar missions.

U.S. Army Materiel Command commanding general, Gen. Benjamin Griffin and U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command's commanding general, Maj. Gen. James Pillsbury participated with depot commander, Col. Robert Swenson in the ceremony. They were joined by John Blake, executive deputy secretary of Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, who read a congratulatory letter from Governor Ed Rendell.

Looking out into a sea of employees and supporters of the depot from among the community, Griffin said, "This is your award. It is the Army equivalent of the Shingo prize (awarded twice to Letterkenny for manufacturing excellence). You earned it. Congratulations!"

"In recognition of excellence for outstanding continued performance, Letterkenny Army Depot is awarded the Army Superior Unit Award. Letterkenny has exceeded expectations at every level. Letterkenny Army Depot was the first Army depot to win the distinguished Shingo prize for Excellence in Manufacturing for the depot's work on Tactical Missiles and Air Defense Systems. Letterkenny continued their success by also winning the 2005 Department of Defense Award for Continuous Process Improvements. In 2006, Letterkenny became the only Army depot to win a second Shingo prize for their work on the Tactical Vehicles - HMMWV Program. Letterkenny's recognition is reflective of the Army Material Command's goal to "get it faster to the field." Letterkenny's success is proven by their employee's commitment and support to the warfighter everyday!"
