FORT CARSON, Colo.-Soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, volunteered at an area Goodwill store in recent weeks to support the community which has supported Fort Carson.
The Soldiers, all from Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, have helped out in a variety of ways at the store, including sorting donations, pricing items and putting product out on the floor. They began volunteering at the Circle Drive store March 8 and continued helping out for a couple of weeks.
"I think the Soldiers are a tremendous help," said Trish Moss, a Goodwill employee. "They are compliant and disciplined."
Working with them is a breath of fresh air, she added.
By volunteering their time in the local community, Soldiers seem to feel the joy they can convey to the citizens of the Front Range community.
"While we're deployed, we're doing good for the people over there. Now we're supporting our own communities and it feels really good," said Spc. Zackery Guerrero, armor crewman, HHD. "It's something that brings us closer together as a unit and community, and gives us a real sense of pride."
Some of the Soldiers in HHD are currently transitioning out of the Army and work like this can help them form a solid foundation for life outside the military.
"This gets Soldiers involved with their community and works on their personal character development," said Capt. Cash Freeman, commander, HHD.
There are about 16 Soldiers who volunteer at the Goodwill store. Other projects in the works for HHD Soldiers are helping at local soup kitchens, animal shelters and Veterans Affairs hospitals.
"Colorado Springs is our community; Goodwill is just one of the organizations that we're assisting with," said Freeman. "We're having a direct impact on our community
