AAFES grows with Fort Bragg

FORT BRAGG , N.C. - The acronyms BRAC and FORSCOM continue to be used around Fort Bragg with fervor as it prepares for the arrival of the U.S. Forces Command. To better care for the installation's growing population, the Army Air Force Exchange service is broadening its services, too.

In early June, the North Post Commissary will have new neighbors when the new AAFES shoppette, complete with a Snack Avenue, gas station and a car wash; a Starbucks; a Popeye's Chicken with drive-thru convenience; and a furniture store open.

The shoppette's Snack Avenue will offer a variety of coffee drinks, slushies, hot dogs, nachos and cookies. Since the shoppette will offer a variety of alcoholic beverages for purchase, the existing Class Six on the other side of the Commissary structure will close to provide AAFES with additional office space.

On the other side of post, the South Post Commissary will also see a new shoppette with a gas station and a new Burger King with a drive thru. The new buildings are projected to open in mid-July.

Fort Bragg's leadership and AAFES work together to determine what additional services are needed on post.

"What we build is requested by the post and the request is coordinated through our headquarters," said Angela Comstock, AAFES public affairs representative. "Additional shoppettes are the typical requests and location, space and demand determine what else we add."

Comstock said additional food facilities are in high demand here on Fort Bragg. To accommodate this demand, AAFES has several additional projects in the works. These include adding a Burger King along with a gas station at the 82nd Airborne Division Food Court off of Ardennes Street; renovations to the Mini Mall off of Reilly Street with the addition of a Subway and Burger King; and creating a new food court at the old Firestone building on North Post.

The Linden Oaks housing area will also see a new shoppette in the future with additional plans to eventually add a gas station and some fast food options there. The car care center at Smoke Bomb Hill will be renovated to become a full service shoppette and Camp Mackall will also receive a new shoppette.

Sergeant Todd Davis, Company C, 1st Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division said he is looking forward to the new additions.

"It will be really nice to have another Starbucks," said Davis. "The one we have is always crowded. I'm glad AAFES is expanding."
