CAMP HOVEY - Soldiers and officers bowled their best as 1st Heavy Brigade Combat Team, competed for the Camp Hovey Bowling League Championship, Feb. 23 in the Camp Hovey Bowling Center.

The league consisted of eight separate teams, who had been strenuously preparing for the event since beginning the league last October.

Team names like 'Bowl Dawgs', ''Magics' and 'The Real Deal' had distinctly different personalities.

Capt. B.J. Patterson, the civil-military operations officer for 1HBCT and president of the bowling league, expresses the motive for creating a bowling league on Camp Hovey.

"The bowling center on Camp Hovey is open seven days a week. Family Morale, Welfare and Recreation have it for Soldiers to entertain themselves while on post," Patterson said. "They already offer many great discounts among other things, but creating a bowling league helps get Soldiers to come together and show their competitive side."

The bowling center also offers food and beverage services as well as a smoke free, friendly environment.

"You don't always have to go out and spend a lot of money to have a good time," Patterson said. "Meeting new people from events such as this league can create friendships as well."

Noncommissioned officers Staff Sgt. Robert Rodriguez from Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1HBCT, said that he enjoyed bowling every week and having fun all the way through the final game for the league.

"This is a good activity for Soldiers and officers to be able to have fun and get competitive against each other," Rodriguez said. "Especially with this bowling league; every one can just kick back, relax, and not worry about anything work related."

Winners of the championship game, the 'Jackalobes,' received bowling trophies as well as prize money.
