Rock Island Arsenal wins environmental award

ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL, Ill. - Rock Island Arsenal is constantly executing efforts to remain Soldier ready. Though it may sometimes go unnoticed RIA has recently received an award for executing readiness efforts of a different kindAca,!"environmental. RIA received an Industrial Pretreatment Award from the City of Rock Island last week for maintaining compliance with federally mandated treatment of wastewater before to discharging it in the river.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) requires certain categories of industries to pre-treat their wastewater prior to discharge into sewer system. Pretreatment of industrial wastewater helps protect the sewer system, helps ensure worker safety, encourages industrial pollution prevention programs, helps maintain the beneficial use of sewage sludge, and helps ensure wastewater plant operations meet discharge standards.

As both an industry who is a big water user, and one who handles pollutants of concern, like metals, RIA has been thanked by the city for monitoring these areas without any violations. RIA has received an award for every year the program has been in existenceAca,!"14 years.

"The Rock Island Arsenal has an outstanding record of compliance, and its workers should be proud of the mission and job they have been doing,Aca,!A? said Tim Ridder, Environmental Services Coordinator for the City of Rock Island. Aca,!A"The City of Rock Island looks forward to the continuation of its long standing intergovernmental agreement for treatment of the Rock Island Arsenal's wastewater treatment."

After the certificates of achievement were distributed by Mayor Dennis Pauley, Ridder gave a presentation to local industry leaders detailing the importance of environmental safety, and other initiatives the city takes to remain environmentally active.

The ceremony, which was held in Rock IslandAca,!a,,cs City Hall, also recognized seven other local industries.

"As a local leader in manufacturing, we have a responsibility to ensure that we're not harming the community environment where our workers, their families, and our neighbors live and thrive," said Mike Bunch, Deputy, Commander of Rock Island Arsenal Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center. "We take that responsibility seriously, and our efforts have been acknowledged today."

While it strives to meet the needs of the Soldier in the field, Rock Island Arsenal continues to leave its markAca,!"just not on the environment.
