<B>ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md.</B> - Army officials announced a realignment of its technical analysis operations last month, returning the <a href="http://web.amsaa.army.mil/index.html">Army Material Systems Analysis Activity</a> to the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command.
As the center for Army science and technology, RDECOM develops solutions for Soldiers at research and development centers across the nation. The AMSAA team is made up of highly skilled engineers, operations research analysts, mathematicians and computer scientists performing a wide range of critical analyses. With AMSAA in the RDECOM portfolio the command spans the Army technology spectrum from basic science to advanced analysis of how technology performs in the field, officials said.
"In March of 2009 I directed a comprehensive study to assess the feasibility of creating an Army Materiel Command Analysis Center that would better align key analytic capabilities within AMC to support overall governance and execution of the Army Materiel Enterprise," wrote Army Materiel Command Commanding General Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody in a February memorandum. "As part of this effort, AMSAA was provisionally realigned from RDECOM under the AMC command group. After further consideration of this matter, I have determined that effective 15 January 2010, AMSAA will return to its former alignment and report directly to RDECOM as a subordinate activity."
The analytical team had been part of the RDECOM family since 2002 before its 2009 provisional realignment. The organization is primarily made up of Department of the Army civilian employees located at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. and Huntsville, Ala., along with small data analysis teams on virtually every major Army installation in the world. Its employees focus on lifecycle materiel and logistics systems analysis.
"I see AMSAA, under RDECOM, as a key component in the design and structure of the AMC Analysis Center that synchronizes key analytical capabilities currently being performed by multiple organizations within AMC," Dunwoody wrote. "Whether this resides within RDECOM or AMC HQ is less important than in getting the capability right to better support our Nation's strength - the Warfighter."
Dunwoody said her team will "continue to assess how to improve our institutional effectiveness as part of the Army Enterprise effort."
