Kings Pond Campout set for March 27

A campsite can cost around $23, but military ID cardholders won't have to worry about that March 27-28 at the Kings Pond Campout, a free event.

The campout is a staple of Outdoor Recreation activities and includes fun for the whole family, said Brittany Beadle, a recreation specialist.

Activities include canoeing, kayaking, horseshoes, corn hole, volleyball and board games. Sayers Library staff will read stories by the fireside, help children with arts and crafts and campers can make s'mores. Geocaching, a game where players use global positioning systems to find items, has been added to this year's campout.

Even if folks don't want to camp overnight, they can come out for the day, Beadle said.

This is the first of six campouts planned for the year.

Other campouts are scheduled for April 17-18 and May 29-30, with the final three in September through November.

Previous campouts have brought in around 80 to 120 campers, Beadle said. She said she is expecting just as many at this campout.

"Although we have a large turnout, I think there are still a lot of people who don't know about Kings Pond," she said. "I want folks to know Kings Pond is open 24/7 and they are welcome to go out there anytime."

The camp activities will kick off at noon March 27 and will end at 10 a.m. March 28. Campers are encouraged to preregister by March 26 by calling 706-545-9636 or they can stop by Outdoor Recreation, Building 1707 on Gillespie Street. Campers can also register at the event.

Participants can bring their own tents or rent from Outdoor Recreation for prices ranging from $5-$12. Outdoor Recreation also has sleeping bags, propane lanterns and stoves for rent. For more information, call 706-545-7978.
