DETROIT ARSENAL, Mich. Aca,!" Thanks to almost $200,000 in stimulus funds, the Department of Public Works here celebrated the renovation of its building during a ceremony Feb. 11.

An increase in mission requirements mandated the need for facility renovation within DPW at the Detroit Arsenal.

Some $190,000 was allocated as part of President ObamaAca,!a,,cs authorization under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. This stimulus-funded project enabled the DPW organization to redesign and rebuild the outdated infrastructure, improve operating efficiency, and provide an appealing, exciting and safe place to work.

Civilian contractors were leveraged to renovate the facility, circulating much needed dollars into the local economy and meeting the intent of President Obama while supporting Army operations.

Aca,!A"I wanted to design a sustainable building which will last for future generations,Aca,!A? said Jason Pietrandrea, project supervisor, DPW Engineering Division.

The offices were reconfigured to accommodate the engineering staff, which more than doubled to sustain growth on the installation.

With new ceiling tiles, paint, and carpet, visitors immediately notice the bright and cheery atmosphere; but much of the renovation goes beyond to what the viewer cannot see. New LAN drops, telephone cables and insulated exterior walls and ceilings were updated; traces of asbestos were removed; and walls were soundproofed. Offices were also regrouped by discipline in order to facilitate cooperation, brainstorming and efficiency among engineers.
