Embrace the Challenges

By Lt. Col. Lee Nordin, Commander, 231st Maneuver Task ForceJanuary 21, 2010

The soldiers of my Battalion, Task Force Defender, have been operating in sector for nearly 90 days now, relationships have been developed with key leaders throughout Kosovo, patrol schedules have been established, and everyone seems to have found their "Battle Rhythm".

This acclimation has not only taken place in my Battalion, but rather throughout Multi-National Task Force East (MNTF-E) and while we have only been in Kosovo a short time, I believe we have much to be proud of. MNTF-E has had a stellar safety record, few discipline issues, and has successfully executed all assigned missions. These things don't just happen. They are a result leaders and soldiers working together with common purpose.

I mentioned we have much to be proud of, and while that is certainly true, our work here is far from complete. As we usher in the New Year, we also enter a transformational time for MNTF-E and KFOR. We must embrace the challenges that lie ahead as KFOR continues to evolve in response to the positive developments throughout Kosovo.

Moving further down the road of "Deterrent Presence" will bring much change. As we transition to a Multi-National Battle Group structure we can expect changes in mission, some changes in formations, and perhaps even changes in duty positions, but these changes are positive and visionary. Mahatma Gandhi said "The future depends on what we do in the present" and that is especially true for KFOR. The transformation we go through now will set the conditions for success in years to come.

We have arrived at a pivotal juncture and we must seize this opportunity to build upon the work of our predecessors and prepare for a time when NATO forces will be far less visible in Kosovo. KFOR is a "success story" and we need to be diligent and thoughtful as we write the final chapters.
