FORT BENNING, Ga. - Guard Christopher Thomas scored 20 points to lead the Bulldogs to a 59-32 win over the Red Rockets in their season opener Tuesday at Smith Fitness Center.
The Bulldogs of MEDDAC got off to a quick start in the first half, with Thomas scoring 12 points to go along with offensive contributions from Brandon Sparks, Theodis Hale, Raymond Wilhelm, Otis Lewis and Julius Miley. The Red Rockets of E Company, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, bit at the Bulldogs' heels at the end of the first period, trailing 15-14, but fell behind 30-20 at the half.
MEDDAC stepped up its attack in the second half, scoring 20 points in the first 10 minutes to take a 50-28 lead and put the game out of reach.
Bulldogs head coach James Johnson said his team played well for the first game of the season.
"Once we started playing, we picked it up," he said. "The first half was close because we weren't playing good defense, so we went back to the basics. We were running a 1-2-2 trap in practice, so we were trying to work that. We switched to a 2-3 and in the second half, we ran the trap for a while and went back to the 2-3. We did pretty good but the team started getting a little tired, so I pulled them back, let them relax on the defensive end and pick up on the offensive end."
Bulldogs forward Joshua Brown said his team was able to keep the momentum.
"We created a lot of turnovers with our defense and had some fast guards who were able to get out and get easy fast breaks," he said. "We played good defense, put a lot of pressure on them and got some easy buckets."
