ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. - The Army eCYBERMISSION Competition is Getting Students and Teachers Excited about STEM Education. The competition is a free, web-based, science, technology, engineering and math competition for students in grades six through nine.

Army officials hope to promote and enable students from a diverse range of proficiency levels, interests and backgrounds to recognize the real-life application of science, technology, engineering and math education.

Students from the same grade and region form teams of three to four members with one adult Team Advisor. Team members can be from private, public or home schools, as well as clubs, organizations, after-school programs or extracurricular activities. A Team Advisor can be a teacher, parent, club or organization leader, or a member of the community who has an interest in the future of STEM education.

Each team selects one of the four Mission Challenges: Sports and Recreation, Health and Safety, the Environment or the Scenario Challenge focused on renewable energy. The teams then identify a problem in their community they would like to solve. Teams work through the scientific method by formulating a hypothesis and conducting research and experiments to come up with a solution to their problem.

Students must submit a "mission folder," the official write-up of their project, through the eCYBERMISSION web site by the submission deadline of Feb. 26, 2010.

The mission folders are independently evaluated against four judging criteria: application of science, math and technology; benefit to the community; team collaboration and communication; and innovation, originality and creativity. Each folder is scored five times by a randomly assigned virtual judge, ensuring objectivity.

eCYBERMISSION awards 96 teams across the nation and in Department of Defense Education Activity schools overseas every year. Participants may win up to $8,000 in U.S. EE Savings Bonds to put toward continuing their education.

Last year, more than 12,000 students registered for eCYBERMISSION and over 2,000 teams submitted their folders for judging. Now in its eighth year, eCYBERMISSION has awarded more than $6.7 million in U.S. EE Savings Bonds in support of the science, math and technology leaders of tomorrow.

Since its inception, more than 58,000 students from across the country, in U.S. territories and DoDEA schools worldwide have participated in the competition.

Registration for the 2009-2010 eCYBERMISSION competition is open. Students and Team Advisors may register by at 11:59 p.m. (EST), Friday, Dec. 18. Join our efforts to promote science, math and technology education to students across the nation.
