FORWARD OPERATING BASE WARRIOR, KIRKUK, Iraq- Coordination between the different Iraqi Security Forces is vital to continued stabilization and security in Kirkuk province.
To help enhance this coordination, a new Joint Coordination Center opened in Dibbis Dec. 6, allowing Iraqi Police and Iraqi Army elements in the area to work side-by-side.
"As their experience and ability to counteract terrorism and crime increases, the police and army have developed new and better methods of coordination, planning, and operation," said Lt. Col. David Lesperance, the commander of 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, whose unit works closely with both the IP and IA in the Dibbis area. "These joint coordination centers are the cornerstone of cooperation for the ISF and a model of success."
According to Capt. Peter Decareau, the commander of Delta Company, 1st Bn., 8th Cav. Regt., prior to this new JCC, the IA and IP had operated out of a "makeshift" JCC.
"This [new JCC] really gives them their own place to call home," he said.
"This is our place to share information and hold meetings with local leaders and the U.S. Military," said Lt. Col. Abdulla, the director of the Dibbis JCC.
Even when operating out of the smaller building, the JCC still managed to have a profound effect on the area.
According to Abdulla, the coordination at between the IP and IA at the JCC helped lead to the discovery of dozens of weapons caches, and in detaining wanted smugglers and insurgents alike. The JCC also coordinated humanitarian assistance to local villages and delivered much needed electricity generators to local communities.
And with the new center, things are likely to continue to improve.
"I make a promise that our station will continue to work together with all the other stations to stop crime and protect the people," said Abdulla.
