FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas -- Fort Sam Houston noncommissioned officers came together at the Army Community Service center Nov. 5 to celebrate their pride-in-service by honoring veterans, prisoners of war and those still missing in action.
Fort Sam Houston and Army Medical Department Center and School Command Sgt. Maj. Howard Riles welcomed everyone, "Today we are celebrating veterans; remembering those who have served before us and entrusted us with the heritage of leadership."
The Honor Guard from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 76, the oldest VFW post in Texas, posted the colors.
James Nier, executive director of the Texas Veterans Commission and guest speaker said, "A veteran is a fellow citizen, an ordinary person, who at one point in his or her life made out a blank check payable to the United States of America for any amount including life itself."
"Veterans come from all walks of life, many different cultures and backgrounds. In spite of those many differences there is a common thread that brings us all together; willingness to give of ourselves and to serve our nation," said Nier.
"Our nation's commitment to our veterans should be total and should never change."
The ceremony also included a legacy presentation by the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club dressed in period uniforms, "Taps" performed by the Post 76 bugler, a gift presentation and cake cutting.
Sgts. 1st Class Timothy and Thomas Harris sang the national anthem and the U.S. Army Medical Command Band performed throughout the event.
